Nicari’s Story
Nicari lives in Dajabon, a village in the Dominican Republic that borders Haiti. Due to the developing state of her community, eye treatments are rarely available to them. Nicari has not been able to see properly ever since she was a toddler. She is now in elementary school and is struggling since she cannot see the board, read, nor study. “Everything I see is blurry.” Due to her sight impairment, Nicari also suffers from intense headaches. She says to her mom, “mama my head hurts, my head hurts so much,” yet her mom cannot do anything to help her.
Nicari has always been a studious young girl. Education is very important to her, so her dad says, “ if she’s not studying, something must be wrong.” Her past years of struggle is what made this surgery even more gratifying. Seeing the smile on her face once the bandage was taken off was something we will never forget.
Since her vision is still not “perfect” we gave her glasses so that she can read the board at school without struggle. We do not want this young girl to struggle anymore than she has. “I want glasses so that I can see better in school,” says Nicari. “With glasses I can see well.”
